Severe Thunderstorm Watch (Level 2)- South Texas, January 24 2012

The Weather Centre has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (Level 2) for Southern Texas today from Noon CST to 6:00 AM tomorrow (CST).

The Weather Centre is expecting strong to possibly severe thunderstorms to form as a positively tilted low pressure system settles in across southern Texas. This positive tilt will act to ease the potential severity of any storms that form. Nonetheless, there will be the potential for severe storms as we see elevated levels of instability shown on several parameters, setting the scene for an active day for Southern Texas. The potential for tornadoes comes in as the system digs into the jet stream and therefore increase the strain and wind speed on the jet stream, much like pushing your finger into the rubber band- the more force you push the rubber band with, the more strain it is under. The same applies to the jet stream, only the jet stream also increases wind speed with added strain from systems. Therefore, wind shearing will be available for tornadoes to use, but nothing too significant. Still, we think it may be enough to cause a few brief and weak tornadoes, so we have issued a Level 2 Severe T-Storm Watch.

This is the debut of our new severe thunderstorm and tornado watches.
