Remaining chilly with some snow on higher ground

As we head into the new working week, it will become unsettled across northern and eastern parts of the UK, although elsewhere should remain relatively dry and settled. During Monday morning, an area of rain will push in across parts of Scotland, bringing with it some snow to higher ground in these parts.

Elsewhere it should begin dry and cloudy across many parts, with some rain showers pushing into parts of England and Wales later. It will, however, feel mildish and remain relatively dry across southern parts of the UK throughout Monday.

As we progress throughout Monday and into Tuesday, another area of rain will initially push in across the far north of the UK, before spreading further south across the country as we head into Tuesday. This is likely to bring some further snowfall across higher ground in Scotland, with the possibility of some sleet/snow showers to some lower levels in these parts too. Any risk of significant snowfall from this cold front (as forecast by others) is also likely to be restricted to higher ground in these parts too. Other parts of the country are likely to experience more in the way of rain, with the possibility of some wintry showers to eastern parts of the UK.

Turning cold & wintry as we head into this weekend

After a brief period of milder weather, the picture is set to turn cold and wintry again as we head into this weekend.

A cold front will work its way across the UK on Saturday, bringing with it a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow to many parts. Some of the snow showers on Saturday are likely to be particularly heavy at times across higher ground in parts of Scotland and northern England, with the possibility of some snow showers to some lower levels in these parts too. These wintry conditions will also be accompanied by some strong winds in places throughout Saturday, especially in parts of the far north. It will become progressively colder across many parts throughout Saturday day and into Saturday night. Sunday day looks set to remain chilly again across most parts with periods of sunshine for many.

Turning briefly milder and windier

As we head into the new working week the weather is set to turn briefly milder and much windier across the UK over the coming days. Temperatures are also set to return to more near or slightly above average for this time of year. Most places will also become largely dry and relatively uneventful in terms of weather, although there could be the occasional rain shower about at times. However, I have stated on many occasions that any periods of moderation between the 15th-28th February, and into the first week of March are likely to be rapidly replaced by colder and snowier weather conditions across many parts of the UK.

I have also stated that “Many northern and central parts of the UK will experience some frequent and heavy falls of snow at times within this period, and this does include lower levels in these parts too. Parts of southern and eastern England, Wales, and Northern Ireland can also expect some falls of snow and wintry showers within this time period too.”

I still expect the remainder of this month to pan out like this at the very least, regardless of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) becoming dominantly negative over the coming weeks. The NAO becoming dominantly negative in the coming weeks will simply enhance the severity and extent of the cold weather over both the UK and Europe during this period and into spring.

Regardless of either scenario unfolding, there is still the prospect of February breaking records (one of the official months of winter and something that I was quoted as saying in almost every British national newspaper back in September/October 2011). The current mean Central England Temperature (CET) is at minus 4.5C below average for February to date, and with the further cold periods and snow that I am forecasting for the remainder of the month, this part of my original forecast still actually holds some clear validity.
