As we head into this weekend, it will feel much colder than of late across most parts of the UK. Friday will see more in the way of cloudiness across the UK, especially in some coastal parts of Scotland and northern England. It will also feel much fresher than of late in these parts, with the occasional very light rain shower possible too. Elsewhere, will remain dry throughout Friday, and although it will be noticeably cloudier than of late, the afternoon could see some good sunny spells breaking through in places.

Saturday will also see much more in the way of cloudiness across most parts of the UK. It will also remain relatively dry across most parts of the country once again, and although there could be the occasional light rain shower in some places; these really won't amount to much at all. Saturday evening will then become increasingly chilly across many parts, with a widespread frost likely to develop under clearer conditions.

Sunday will therefore begin chilly across many parts for the time of the year. It will also remain dry across most parts of the country once again during Sunday, but with more in the way of sunshine on offer, especially across more southern parts of the UK. However, there is also the potential for some wetter and windier weather across parts of the far north, as we progress throughout Sunday and into Monday.

Unsettled & colder weekend ahead

As we progress through this evening and into tomorrow, a band of wet and windy weather will bring some heavy rain to parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England, before pushing into some other parts later.

Some further rain showers will affect parts of Scotland, England and Wales during Saturday too. Sunday should remain settled across most parts after some early rain showers in places, although it will remain unsettled with some further showers possible in areas more south of the UK.

Some of the showers could turn briefly wintry in nature throughout this weekend, especially across higher ground. It will also feel much colder than of late across most parts.

Settled week to an unsettled weekend

As we head into the new working week, the weather is set to remain relatively settled across the UK. There is the potential for some ground frosts and fog in places due to the long clear periods throughout the evenings.

However, as we progress through Friday and into next weekend, the weather looks set to turn relatively unsettled across most parts of the UK. It is likely to turn wet and windy across many parts, with the strongest of these winds more probable in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and possibly to parts of northern England too. It will also feel much cooler than earlier in the week.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the month, and it is likely to remain relatively dry. There will be the occasional rain shower here and there, but any rainfall will become thinly dispersed across most parts during this period. The more settled weather in this period will bring some milder and brighter conditions across many parts. However, this will also bring with it some colder evenings and foggier weather to parts of the country too. Most parts will feature near to above-average temperatures for the remainder of the month, although parts of southern and eastern England are likely to be particularly chilly for this time of the year.

Sunday 4th March 2012 - Weather Forecast Update

In follow-up from my last update and forecast below, the wintry mix of rain, sleet, snow and winds pushing in across the UK is now likely to extend into Monday too. As we progress through the remainder of today and into tomorrow, there is the potential for some heavy snow across higher ground in central and eastern parts, with the possibility of sleet/snow to some lower levels in these parts too. Most parts will then become largely dry and bright as we progress throughout the remainder of Monday, it will however remain cold. It should also stay generally unsettled and windy at times throughout the new working week. There is the possibility for some further wintry showers in places, before a return to milder weather conditions for most once again.

A return to winter weather this weekend

The way the weather has shaped up this week in terms of mildness, you could have been easily fooled into thinking that winter was over for this year. However, I did clearly state only last Saturday that:

Even though it is set to turn milder once again as we head into the start of next week, I still feel that the remainder of February and into the start of spring could still bring a number of notable wintry blasts of cold and snow to the UK that the professional meteorologists are possibly underestimating (and as I originally forecast).

I also stated:

Although the periods of moderation are likely to be less brief than I had anticipated in my original calculations for this period.

So as we head into this weekend, it is set to turn colder and fairly unsettled across most parts of the UK. A number of weather fronts look set to bring a wintry mix of rain, sleet, snow and strong winds to the UK. Saturday will see a wintry mix pushing its way eastwards across the UK, before clearing some parts of eastern England later. This could offer some potentially heavy falls of snow across higher ground as the front approaches these parts, with the possibility of snow to some lower levels too. Another wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow looks set to initially move in across parts of western and southern England throughout Sunday. Sunday will also remain relatively cold and unsettled, with the potential for some further wintry showers in the north too.

No severe weather warnings have been issued, and the current Met Office outlook for this weekend states two lines of text, which currently read:

Now although the spring and autumn periods have become an extremely difficult period to forecast for in recent years, due to some of the unusual patterns that have developed. March and into mid April are looking to offer some relatively dry weather at times in terms of rainfall amounts at present. This is likely to create the usual drought fears as we head into the summer as some reservoirs are already operating at low levels after the below average rainfall from this winter.

The March to April period is also initially looking like a mixed bag of cold and milder weather at times. It will also be particularly windy at times with some wintry showers in places within this period too. However, the latter part of April and into May could offer some potentially warmer and sunnier periods of weather at times. There does remain some uncertainty with myself in regard to the actual rainfall amounts that we are likely to experience in the second half of spring at present. On this basis, I will say that the rainfall amounts are likely to be near or below average for the spring period as a whole. Temperatures are also likely to be near or below average as a whole for spring dependent upon the May period too.

Disclaimer – If any aspect of my original long range forecast requires amendment, I will make an appropriate revision of this for up to two months in advance when possible. This is effectively still a long range forecast in itself, if you compare this to that of others. Please allow some slight deviations in exact timing of given scenarios, I.e. some months may slightly overlap or periods of certain weather types may be more prolonged/shorter than originally forecast, due to the nature of long range weather forecasting and how far ahead this forecast is being issued.

After a brief period of milder weather, the picture is set to turn cold and wintry again as we head into this weekend.

A cold front will work its way across the UK on Saturday, bringing with it a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow to many parts. Some of the snow showers on Saturday are likely to be particularly heavy at times across higher ground in parts of Scotland and northern England, with the possibility of some snow showers to some lower levels in these parts too. These wintry conditions will also be accompanied by some strong winds in places throughout Saturday, especially in parts of the far north. It will become progressively colder across many parts throughout Saturday day and into Saturday night. Sunday day looks set to remain chilly again across most parts with periods of sunshine for many.

Still feeling cold & wintry going into next week

After widespread snow fell across most parts of the UK as forecast, the new working week will also begin cold across most parts with fog patches in places. It will then become dry and settled across most northern parts throughout Monday, with some further brief wintry showers possible across some parts of south east England. It will still feel relatively cold throughout Monday, but not as cold as of late. Elsewhere is likely to remain grey with some light rain showers or drizzle throughout the day. Tuesday will also see some further rain coming in across northern and western parts, and some of these showers could also be briefly wintry in nature in these parts too.

As we approach the middle of the working week it will remain cold across most parts throughout Wednesday. Some further wet weather looks set to initially bring another wintry mix of rain, sleet, and snow throughout Wednesday to parts of Scotland and northern England.

A continuation of overnight frosts mixed in with these expected conditions, will also make driving conditions hazardous at times.

Turning colder again across most parts

After a mild and windy day across the UK today, things are set to turn much colder again through the next few days and into this weekend, including areas further south too. As we progress through Wednesday night and into Thursday, there will be some wintry showers at times across higher ground in northern parts of the UK. Thursday day will see wintry showers become quite prominent across northern and western parts of the UK. Some of these wintry showers will fall as snow across higher ground in these parts, with the possibility of some snow showers to lower levels at times in these parts too.

Friday and into the weekend will see much clearer skies and remain cold across most parts. There will however be a continuation of wintry showers across some northern and western parts at times, especially across higher ground. Overnight frosts will also create icy patches throughout Friday and into this weekend, which could lead to some dangerous driving conditions at times.
